BUA IN CONCERT at BAILE
CORCAIGH PUB
A quintet comprised of some of America’s most talented, young musicians,
Bua have been described by Irish Music Magazine as “the essence of a superb
band,” their sound “a throwback to the playing of the 1960s and 1970s,
keeping the music down the path of tradition” and their 2006 release, Live
at Martyrs’, “a work without gimmicks, where the musicianship is
of the highest quality.” It is no surprise then that Bua, lending to its
Irish Gaelic meaning of ‘innate gift,’ have quickly risen to the
status of America’s premier traditional Irish music ensemble.

IRISH-RUSSIAN MUSIC!
REELROAD IN CONCERT AT BAILE CORCAIGH They’re a Russian
Post Folk Ensemble. Originally from St. Petersburg in Russia, Reelroad began
as a Celtic band. They still play Celtic music but are primarily dedicated
to rebuilding Russian contemporary folk music - music that was driven almost
completely underground during the last 70 years. While Reelroad draws its musical
forms and inspiration from Russian folk music, the rhythms are modern
and identifiable. Every concert of Reelroad is a festival! The group's
drive and power will leave an impression on everybody. The Russian-Celtic
group uses different Celtic and Russian traditional instruments - bagpipes
Galician Gaita), hurdy-gurdy, fiddle, zhaleika, bombard, Celtic harp,
etc. alongside more modern instruments such as the bass guitar and
full drum set. Baile Corcaigh Pub...

Many thanks
to all in our Irish community came out to support the Midwest
Fleadh Cheoil. We enjoyed lots of support either by attendance
the Bohola concert, the band contests on Saturday or by being
a volunteer manning the competition rooms or registration table.
needed to be done. The folks who came from accross US and Canade
were very impressed by the Irish in Detroit and how obvious it
was that everyone was helping.

FACTS: THE IRISH IN DETROIT
Assimilation: Scorned in the 19th Century by native-born
Americans as a bad influence on the country, the Irish are thoroughly
melted into the population: According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more
than 500,000 metro Detroiter's claim some Irish ancestry.
Arrival: In the 1840s.
Neighborhoods: Downtown; around Mt. Elliott-E. Jefferson
and most notably on the near west side, in what became Corktown.
Peak: By 1850, the Irish were the region's biggest
ethnic group, about a third of the foreign-born population. The Germans
soon surpassed them.
Stats: In 1850, 1 in 7 Detroiters had been born in
Ireland. By 1880, that figure was 1 in 20. In 1910, it was 1 in 80.
Clout: Detroit's Irish became influential in law,
law enforcement, politics and the Catholic Church. But they never dominated
Detroit the way the Irish dominated Boston, Chicago, New York and San
Francisco in either population or power.

Urban Frontier," by Jo Ellen Vinyard More...
